Spring Schedule!

DJs! Listeners! Read Me!

  • The Spring 2008 schedule is now up on the schedule page. Exciting, I know.
  • For the listeners, take a look and see when your favorite shows are on and the plethora of new ones. Get ready for a semester of great programming on WQHS!
  • DJs, check the schedule to see when your show is. If you see a misspling or if something needs changing, please email me (programdirector@wqhs.org). There were a couple complications, so if you don't see your name on there and requested a show, email me ASAP with an open slot you would like to take or with a detailed list of when you could do a show and I will try and shuffle things around. If for some reason you can't do the slot you are in, email me ultra ASAP so I can take you out of that slot and let the others have at it.
  • New DJs: look for postings here and emails about training and the whole becoming a DJ process.
Happy New Year everyone! Much love, WQHS

Getting on the DJ listserv

Hey DJs! Just a quick note from your friendly station manager-elect: If you're not on the WQHS-DJs listserv yet, send an email with your name in it to: wqhs-djs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you'll be all set.

Congratulations!

Thanks DJs for the wonderful general body meeting yesterday. We unveiled our kick-ass new T-Shirts, awarded a new DJ of the Fortnight, and elected a brand spankin' new Board.

First of all, huzzahs to Mike Murphy, who ascends to the dizzying heights of WQHS Station Manager. Start kissing up now by listening to Mike's show Cheese and Cereal, with the reigning Tech Director, Andrew Avrin.

And make way for the Promotions machine. Like the many-headed Hydra, we lost one co-director and sprouted three new ones. Sam McDermott held down the fort, and added the lucky winners: Katonah Coster, Trisha Low, and Molly Hude. Word!

Not to be outdone, like Germany reclaiming the Sudetenland (too soon?), Business Director doubled in size, with Lauren Mancuso and Kirsten Saracini getting on board.

To fill Mike's capacious shoes, a truly outstanding candidate had to step forward for Music Director, and Margot Wohl was up for the challenge.

Not to be outdone, amidst all the chaos, Ben Miller shook things up and stayed as Program Director.

So congrats to the new board. You guys rock. We were, however, unsuccessful with finding a new Webmaster. If interested, shoot an email to the new station manager.

And who could forget the DJ of the Fortnight? Hats off to Grace Ambrose and Sarah Stoecker, who wowed the board with their foot-stomping Saturday extravaganza, This Charming Girl. Keep up the good work guys; with exams coming up and the semester switching on us, who knows when we'll announce a new one....

Fall Schedule

Hello out there.

The fall schedule is now up on the schedule page (I prefer the table format myself). We are still working through one small issue but it is pretty much done. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is in one of the slots they told me they could do. If for some reason you can't do the time you are scheduled for, send me an email with an empty slot that you would prefer. If there are none of those, let me know and I will try to shuffle things around. Also, if there is a misspeling, send me the corrected one. If you are not signed up for a show but want one, send me an email. New and old DJs, make sure you are signed up for the DJ listserv by sending a blank email here. Keep on rocking the summer and see you in the fall.

Today is the Day of Silence at WQHS.
The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!).

To protest these rates and encourage you to take action and contact your Congressional representatives, we are taking part in the Day of Silence, by silencing our programming for today.

We ask that you excuse the interruption of our normal programming, and ask that you take action to help ensure this silence is not permanent. Please call your Congressional Representatives today. Click here for instructions how. Thank you.

Have A Great Summer

Thanks to all our DJs, listeners, board members, and everyone else who helped make this year special. We're in semi-dormancy for summer break (except for our must-hear Thursday afternoon schedule) but we'll be back and better than ever this fall.

You can look forward to more concerts, better shows, and non-stop programming for the next semester. And, to keep up with what's happening, check out our MySpace page as well.

  Until next time, compadres....

Just wanted to remind everyone that if you want a show in the fall, send me an email with your name, show name, show description, and your top 5 preferred slots for a show.

Good day to you.

Hello WQHSers-

It's the end of the semester, and that means it's time for another general body meeting. Current and prospective DJs are all invited.

The meeting will be held at the station this Tuesday, April 24th. Topics to be discussed include: signing up for shows next semester; promotions activities for the next year; new station policies and goals; and extended training for DJs interested in live productions.

Remember, shows are first come first served, so this is not a meeting to miss.

DJ of the Fortnight....DUANE KIRKSEY!

Tune in over the next couple weeks to hear Duane spin sets that other DJs can only dream about. And let us know if you've heard any other DJs who deserve the glory of DJ of the Fortnight.

MICHAEL CASTLE is your very first DJ OF THE FORTNIGHT!!!!

DJ Of The Fortnight Is Back

Over the long and storied history of WQHS, DJ Of The Fornight was a particularly time-honored tradition. Every two weeks the finest DJs of the land proved their valour to earn the coveted title. But in recent years- as the station lost its way, ran with the wrong crowd, fell into debt, got evicted, slept in its car, and lost the rest of its money on a three-day binge of crystal meth and Adult Alternative Albums ("it worked for XPN" the station said between sobs)- the title lost its luster and impudent knaves claimed the illustrious title. DJ of the Fortnight slowly faded away, becoming a memory of glory days past.

BUT NOW IT'S BACK! And we want YOU, the listener, to tell us about your favorite DJs. Nominate them so we can listen over the course of the fortnight. Wax poetic about their many virtues so we can put it on posters and pretend we wrote it. Tune in and let us know what you think; just shoot an email to the promotions directors.

DJ Of The Fortnight is coming back better than ever, and it's gonna rock your world.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the show on Friday and to all the bands who played. If you were there, you know how awesome it was.

Pictures are up at the Pilam web site. You can also check there for more show listings at that location.

In other news, we're currently holding a tshirt design contest, as you may already know if you're a Penn student and have seen the flyers around. If you're interested in designing something, send an 2-color (color on background) image around 8x10" at 150 dpi to promotions (at) wqhs.org by Friday, February 9th. For everyone else, keep your eyes peeled for new shirts to go on sale in the coming weeks!

Blogger

The WQHS news update system is now powered by Blogger, which means everything from here on out is archived and commentable and whatever other nice things this format has to offer.

Lament as I do such decentralization, get excited about other people updating the news!

New Site

So now it's a new year, and the website got a makeover. There are still some changes that will happen in the future, but the overall functionality is set and ripe for the browsing!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a swell break and holiday. We here at the station didn't get everything we asked for from Santa Claus (like customers at the Punk Rock Flea Market) but we DID get one special present.

This is our new friend 'Harrison Ford.' Santa left him under the Christmas tree this year, and we couldn't be happier about it! Actually, it wasn't Santa Claus; it was Google image search. In fact, it wasn't even under a tree; it was on the internet.

Well, in any case, you can get what you want by checking out the new schedule, tuning in, and enjoying.

It's going to be a rocking good semester with sonic radness, improved programming, and LIVE music! Yes, that's right. WQHS will be getting back into the Philadelphia music scene by bringing you live music as early as February. Stay tuned.
